What is Diffusion Dialysis (DD)?
Diffusion Dialysis (DD) is a separation process driven by a concentration gradient. It employs special polymer ion-exchange membranes with selective permeability to allow the recovery of acids or alkalis from mixed solutions.
Anion exchange membranes (AEMs): allow anions (e.g., Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻) to pass while blocking cations.
Cation exchange membranes (CEMs): allow cations (e.g., Na⁺, K⁺) to pass while blocking anions.
For example, in acid recovery, hydrogen ions (H⁺) move through the anion membrane much faster than metal ions, enabling acid separation and recycling, while retaining heavy metals and impurities.

How Does DD Work?
Dialysis chamber: contains the waste acid/alkali solution.
Diffusion chamber: contains water or dilute acid/alkali as the receiving solution.
Through counter-current flow, H⁺ or OH⁻ ions selectively migrate into the diffusion chamber, forming a recovered acid or alkali solution.
Metal ions or impurities are retained, ensuring high-purity recovery.
This process is widely used for acid recovery in electroplating, alkali recycling in aluminum finishing, and sustainable chemical resource management.
